Regent Street & Piccadilly

Saturday morning I thought I would take the kids to central London, Christmas is only 6 weeks away and I wanted to go before the Christmas shopping stampede starts.
We took the train then the tube to Oxford Circus station which opens to Oxford Street, the street was packed with shoppers, we turned round the corner and into Regent Street, this street is very elegant and full of expensive good quality and designer shops.

While Regent Street has some of the nicest shops in London it actually has some of the best looking buildings as well .

In the middle of Regent Street a sign to the famous Carnaby Street which used to be world famous back in the 60s & 70s now it is a tourists attraction full of souvenir shops.

This year's Regent Street's Christmas lights, the theme is the new kids movie: Flushed Away!, it is not that good, I have seen much better light displays before.

Of course when you have children, you have to stop at the world famous toy store Hamleys.
There were members of their staff dressed in fancy dress and standing outside the shop and encouraging people to walk in, it is a huge shop on many floors full of the latest toys and you get to see many demonstrations as well, kids get to try many toys there as well before you decide to buy.
Be warned, it is a very expensive store.

The kids playing with the computers where you get to design things to do with Teddy Bears
A moving winter display

This Teddy giraffe is a bargain at only £3,500 !!
Many items in there are over priced and can be bought at a much cheaper prices in other shops but Hamleys has its own magic that keeps adults & children happy and entertained.

Teddy Bear Heaven

The elegant QUADRANT ARCADE in Regent Street
We ended spending a much longer time in Regent Street than I planned and that was due to the fun at Hamleys.

This is Piccadilly Circus at the back and the famous Eros statue, the area was full of tourists as usual, even though I lived most of my life in London I hardly ever go to these areas, when ever I go I usually feel like a tourist and not a resident of the city, this area can be very expensive and its full of tourists traps.

The Prince of Wales theater where the very popular MAMMA MIA musical is staged, this musical is based on the music of the ever so popular ABBA.

Hard Rock Cafe and Casino, I am not sure when they added a casino, I thought it was a cafe only!, this is actually not the well known Hard Rock Cafe in London which is situated in Park Lane, I think this must be a new one.

Planet Hollywood restaurant and shop, I have never been to Hard Rock cafe or Planet Hollywood in London, too touristy and too too expensive. Planet Hollywood is situated next to the TROCADERO CENTRE which is a tacky tourists trap, it is just few floors full of amusement arcade and gambling machines, most games cost a £1 for a play that lasts less than a minute, it is an absolutely awful place, in the summer it gets packed with tourists, especially Gulf Arabs that spend a vast amount of money in this place.
On a previous visit I have actually seen some Arab women wearing the head scarf and playing with the gambling machines while their kids played games. I walked with the kids inside for a bit and told them that it was very expensive to play here, Thank Allah my kids are very good and do take no for an answer. After we left Trocadero we went for lunch at one of the many fast food places around this area, that was not great either as they were full of people the staff were selling food continuously yet there was hardly any free seats and the service was awful but that is what its like when you go to tourists areas.
It was fun going there with the kids, they enjoyed the noise the lights and the crowds, me? I think it will be few more years before I return there.
We caught the train back for the journey home feeling exhausted, we could not find any seats as the train was packed with shoppers.

The last time I went to London was in 2002 I guess. I miss it!! I do like the craziness of this city! Thanks for the pics! It seemed you had a great time with your kids!

You know, I never went to any Hard Rock Café or Planet Hollywood or any other tourist restaurant in my life! I chose not to go and I don’t have any curiosity about them!
Especially here in Europe, there are many nice places to have a meal or a snack that I think is just a waist of time going to those brand name places. They give me a terrible emptiness feeling!
I do like to go where the locals go. It’s always worth!

Thanks Anglo for updating us on London city. It's been ages that I haven't been.

If everything goes to plan I've promised myself a trip to London hopefully next summer.

Your children look like they had a wonderful time.

I was in a very bad mood, but seeing London again Ahhhhhh.....

living away, im exactly like you, never been to Hard Rock cafe or planet hollywood and have no desire to go and yes london has many nice places and restaurants that are frequented by locals, I like that.

Trabilsia, the children did enjoy it a lot more than me but thats what counts.
I am glad that you are out of your bad mood. maybe next time I tell you where to shop for bargains in London :o)

The last time I went to London was in 1998!

Lovely pictures. Glad you guys had fun. Your children are so cute mashallah. I've said that before and I'll say it again and again.

Nice you had a great time with your kids on Oxford and Regents Street.

In 2004 I spent a week in London, and one of the main reasons besides British Museum and other cultural things, was to shop till I drop - and Oxford Street was hell to my feet. Normally I am no sissy and can easily walk out anyone else...but never in my life had I walked so much on the streets as on Oxford Street and the surrounding streets!!! And I still didn´t see everything ;-)

my last and only trip to London was in 2002 , but it was all about FUN FUN FUN!!!

I liked your way of explaining the route you took, you really reminded me of great memories!

and about the giraffe, that's un reasonable price specially if it was a bargain!

AngloLibyan said...

thank you lebeeya for the lovely comment.

Safia, oxford street is supposed to be the longest shopping street in Europe so no wonder you shopped til you nearly dropped.
I saw the pictures, really nice and covered many places in London, your kids look happy. Thank you.

welcome back Maiuna and thank you.
I was only joking about the Giraffe, only people with more money than sense would spend £3500 on a toy and believe there are many.

oh anglo this post made me wanna go to London really , i was there on this time last year and it was amazing , the coldest time i've experinced with London but i had a great time , and Picaddelly was my best place , i've been to that planet Hollywood , i actually was invited there and i had only a cheese burger and the rest had just snaks chips and burgers and the bell was soooo BIG....
it's really wierd when both Oxford streets and Regent street and so close but so different , Oxford st is like made for Khaliji cosumers , but places like regent st , Sloane Sq and chelsea are made for not just high class poeple but in my opinions it made for celebrities because i never even have the courage to look at the prices....
can't wait to go there soo inshallah..
Pray for me please , exams are soon and i study on the library like 24x7 ..

Thank you Aladdin and I am glad I reminded you of the good times you had in London last year.
InshAllah you will do well in your exams and come back here again for a holiday.

Nice pictures, and valuable info from a good source, I was in London 2 months ago didn’t stay long though, there is something electric about the city, a magnet, I simply love it – the problem I can’t stand it for too long, noise, dirt, the rush, the havoc, but when you know you are at the heart of the world ,, ok, enough I guess,,, nice to know we have someone in london,,, see ya

AngloLibyan said...

thank you cofman and welcome to my blog, I do actually like living here and still think that London is the most beautiful city in the world even though it does have all of those things you mentioned: noise, rush hour, dirt etc...

Anglo, talking about how beautiful london is, 4 or 5 years ago I stayed in a hotel not far from the centre, I drove to Brighton for a day, and on my way back I chose a different road - and I got lost. The strange thing, although I was only, maybe, 20 miles away from the hotel, I was actually between farms,,, I saw horses, cows, trees, hedges,,animals,,, in London??? I couldn’t believe my eyes,,, I thought what a wonderful idea living in the country side and working in london,,,the best of both worlds

AngloLibyan said...

I am glad you enjoyed it besheshentra and I hope you come again InshAllah.

cofman London is amazing and there are city farms even in the middle of London where kids can go and learn about farm life and see the animals.

Oh AngloLibyan -I miss London so much now ! I actually live right next to Russel Square when I come visit - so that walk you mentioned is something I do so often - although I can't afford to buy from those shops LOL. Never been to hard rock cafe - but maybe will dare to do it once ? I need to take Pearl to Hamleys , to have her own Teddy made :P

Glad you had a lovely day , I miss my capuccino at the Italian cafe right next to the Oxford street corner underground , entrance :) I bet the money changing shop is still there too ...

AngloLibyan said...

Libyan violet that money changing shop is still there and will always be there :o)
I hope InshAllah you get to take Pearl to Hamleys soon.

Finally, pictures of your kids! Very cute! The blog looks better with them :)

I have been to Mamma Mia when it first came out, I think 2001/2002--loved it! Of course, Sol thought it was cheesy and kept teasing me with my European taste. Can't help it, I am partly European!

AngloLibyan said...

thank you Hanu for your kind comment.
I would love to see Mamma Mia but its not easy to get the tickets, go on tell him European taste is better :o)
