Wisam's Story

The following article comes from a Libyan newspaper so it does not necessarily represent my opinion, all I did was translate it to the best of my knowledge of English & Arabic, the mother who tells the story provided her name, I can not see how she would lie about something like this, there are points that do not add up like how come the first test result was Negative? here I leave you with Wisam's story:
Wisam is a handsome child with silky hair and large eyes that are full of sadness, he extends his arm to get the injection which has become his life long companion, Wisam is so full of pain that follows him like a shadow.
What can we say about Wisam that has been recked by the illness that took away everything that is beautiful from him?
Wisam Mohamed Al-Abdali was born on 09/02/1998, he was admitted to Benghazi's Children Hospital suffering from stomach pain that caused him to stay over night. Halima Elobeidi, Wisam's mother, said" I stayed with my son at the hospital, when I heard that there has been an out break of HIV between children especially children that were admitted to this hospital in 1998, I hurried with my husband and son Wisam to the hospital, my hands were shaking, I was scared and frightened, I can not tell how our wait for the test results was, the result was Negative i.e. Wisam was fine, his father was very happy but I was very suspicious, most of the children that stayed with Wisam in the same ward back in 98 were infected, how can Wisam be Negative? I started to insist to my husband to get Wisam tested again, I just wanted to make sure, I am a mother and was starting to feel that Wisam's health is not very stable, I can not describe to you the waiting moments. Wisam was playing with his brothers, two and half years we fooled ourselves that our son was not infected, we wanted to believe the first test results, waiting moments that can not be described, long boring wait, I was worried & restless, waiting for Wisam's father arrival from the clinic with the test result, it feels like a life time, my heart is beating fast. The father arrived holding that damn piece of paper, he threw it and fell on the floor, he fainted" Halima continues with tears streaming down her eyes " Wisam is sentenced to an illness that we can not even cope with or live with, Wisam has been stabbed just like the other children, our tragic journey has started, what ever I say about it its not going to do justice to how tragic it is. We Libyans are kind generous people, we are not used to deception and mean treatment. when I sit on my own and reflect on that horrible day, I feel I am going to have a breakdown, when we were admitted to hospital that day (1998) my family brought me a bag full of the popular grapes from the city of Marj, Sanjaka the Bulgarian old nurse was with us in the room, I chose the nicest grapes and offered them to her, she was happy to accept the offering and when she tasted it she really praised how nice they were then she left the room. In that ill fated night I was sitting on a chair next to my son's bed who was asleep. I am an educated woman and Wisam is not my first child, I follow all of his medication routine and know them very well, I know what the Doctors prescribe to him and the doses as well, back to that night, during the very late hours the room was semi dark, in front of me there was a bathroom with the lights on, I noticed a shadow in front of my son's bed I jumped quickly asking what was going on? when I saw with my own eyes Sanjaka injecting a syringe in to my son's drip, when the nurse noticed that I was looking she got scared and quickly hid the syringe, I asked her what was that medicine for and told her that he is not supposed to have any medications at this time, she said that it was to reduce his temperature, I must admit that I spent the rest of the night feeling concerned, in the morning I notified the doctors about what happened during the night. Yes I saw her inject my son with my own eyes, I saw yellowish white liquid and to prove that, my son's HIV virus concentration is low that is because she did not inject the full amount because she got scared when she saw me looking, she is a murderer".
Wisam's mum continues " because of the late discovery of our son's infection, his treatment started late, we went to Italy, Wisam started his long painful treatment, he has to put up with the injections which started then until now, he still has to have tests and continuous treatment that has not stopped even for one day, he has complained many times about the dreaded medical treatment and medications, he has asked numerous times why he has to take it on his own every day but not his brothers, we all tried to hide the truth from him, this made it much worse for us, as he grew older I talked to his father about the pain of not telling Wisam about his illness. When we went last to Italy for his treatment, Wisam asked to talk to me in private, he closed the door then sat for a while, he then lifted his head up and said "Mother I want to say something to you but please promise not to get sad" I said to him go on say it, he said " I know the truth about my illness" I was shocked when he continued "I know I am infected with AIDS, I knew because I noticed how you all follow the AIDS stories on the TV news plus the fact that I come a lot to the hospital where the HIV infected children get treated" I nearly lost my mind hearing that and nearly fainted, I gave him a cuddle and told him that he was injected by criminals that sold their souls, he then added " is it true what the doctors say that there is no cure for AIDS?" I replied that God can do anything, he then said "we should go back to our country" that was how I confronted this difficult situation which added to my sadness.
One of the worst things we had to go through is being abandoned by by friends and relatives especially at the beginning of our ordeal, yes most of them abandoned us because they did not know much about this frightening illness and how it gets transmitted, they were worried about their children. I am going to tell you this incident, I come from a village and once I was invited to my cousin's wedding so I took my children including Wisam with me, we had a happy time there and felt more confident, during the night as we were getting ready to go to sleep, I heard a lot of noise and shouting, I ran out to see what was happening, I saw one of my cousins holding her daughter she was screaming, everyone came over to her, she said Wisam bit her daughter after the kids had an argument, the happy occasion turned into a sad and nasty one, everyone started to be concerned about the girl, they then started to tell Wisam off and demanded that the girl be tested for HIV immediately. some of them said "why did they come to the wedding? they should have not come" I cried a lot that night which I will never forget, I woke up my children gathered our belongings and left their house, I could not stop crying and decided then that I would never go to another occasion unless I really have to and without Wisam who would have to stay with his father as I do not want him and us to suffer even more".
This Tragedy Continuous....

i read this article AL be4: till now this story is not clear we don't know who trying to kill who.i personally i know some family with this disaster and i can not describe their feeling. libyan gov has big role in this disaster and they try to minimized just in five nurse and 1 doctor which is not fair.

AngloLibyan said...

brave heart, the libyan government has full responsibility for this tragedy even if the nurses are guilty, the least the government should do is spend as much money as it takes to make life easier for these people instead of investig money in some corrupted african country.
I too know people with infected children, as you know most people in Benghazi are somehow related or connected. Thank you.

I felt sorry for your words, when you said that you cannot see how she would lie about this, i mean we suspect even people telling their misery, where is this going to lead us?? We don't have trust in anything and anybody.

About the story itself, can anybody say something that might help them?? Can you do something that change their situation?? I mean for those families, i don't think that it will make a difference whether these six live or die. Their children are very sick, and nobody else but them have to live with this situation, nobody can feel what they are feeling. They might feel a little bit of satisfaction when the murderer get what they diserve, but after that?? People don't want their children to come close to those being afraid that their children get infected too. Now being honest, would you let your child play with them?? They may fall down get hurt and start to bleed and then??? So, is there anything that can help them, does it really matters what happends with the six or is it more important for the children to live their childhood normally? Play around with others, going to school normally and not waiting for the unknown??

AngloLibyan said...

mani,Ameen to that

curious, I have written many times about this tragedy, check my archive, I have been accused of repeating the Libyan governments propaganda, like many people, I do not know where or who is telling the truth anymore all I know is that these children need support and I am doing what I can by making their plight more known that is all I can do for them for now and believe me that is a lot more than what many are doing.
yes I can say something that can help them, I already have, the Libyan government has to make their life better by at least providing them with medical treatment, with money, with everything needed for them and their families, this is a lot better than just leaving them to suffer and say there is nothing we can do for them, look at centres in Europe for people with HIV, they provide care ad information in good haapy atmosphere, this illness is not a death sentence anymore, people with HIV live a long life now with the new drugs, this would change their situation.
I do not care what happens to the culprtis, wheather they are the nurses or Libyan officials and I do not think execution is the right answer.
the answer to your question is yes, I am an educated person and know that the virus does not transmit easily so again yes I would let my children play with them.
it is more important for the children to carry on with their life, as I said HIV is not a death sentence anymore.

Sorry for the wrong way that i commented on your post. I didn't mean you by my comment, instead i meant who is reading it, because i got you point when I went through your blog before i wrote my comment. So i searched a little in Blogger about other bloggers who wrote about this and i found that most of the bloggers are asking to free the six, or in other words with only some exceptions bloggers were asking to write to the libyan government to free those six. So my comment was more a general comment to those who think what happends with them is more important. And about feeling sorry for the way we don't trust, i mean i am the first one who suspects everything, and it is difficult for me to believe something that i only read or hear about. In addition to that the question about letting your children play with them, it was also a general question and not to you specifcly, when i read your post, (the article) how bad the woman felt when she went to that wedding i asked my self, and i read and i know about HIV and how it is transmitted, would i be one of them?? Ok, i let them play but do i have to tell my child to take care and tell him that the other child is sick? or do i let them play normally so they don't feel as outsiders??
For me the sitution of the families is also more important, how there should be help for them, i see here in Canada the groups and help and support HIV patients get, in fact i have just posted about centers that offer such help, and to write about them and to talk about them is something that we can do, but as you said the tragedy is going on, we live our normal lives but for them it will be forever completly different. So, sorry for the wrong way of commenting again.

My heart goes out for those families and their infected children every time I read something about them, again as Anglo has already mentioned the Libyan government, whether the nurses are guilty or not, should do something to support those families and provide their ill children with the best treatments available, لاحول ولا قوة إلا بالله.

AL,

I am very skeptical of the story and the extent of truth in it. First, the fact that it was published in a Libyan newspaper takes away from its credibility. I got to the part "... when I saw with my own eyes Sanjaka injecting a syringe in to my son's drip..." and that's where I realized the Libyan propaganda behind the story.

I have never heard any of the families before say they witnessed the injection of their kids with the virus. That doesn't negate it, but still, she recognized the nurse, and it is that specific nurse! What a coincidence.

I'm not a medical expert, but talking about low HIV blood concentration doesn't make sense to me. An infection is an infection and is not measured by concentration. This is not blood sugar or blood count, this is a virus that multiplies and spreads.

AL, I'm curious, why do you go through the trouble of translating such an article? I'm trying to see what you find worthy in it, or why you find it worthy. The woman and her family's struggle could be real, and no one can deny how hard it must be, and the tragedy they have to deal with. But then, there are the other points in the story, and similar stories, that just would do a lot of harm and bring discredibility to the cause and the people involved.

mani said...

1)It's still her own story.
2)translation ensures that freedom of expression is extended to all. 3)Anglo is dedicated to the premise of universal free speech, regardless if it conflicts with 'mainstream' views.
3)anything that appears in any media is liable to be spun, not just libyan press.. are u saying that CNN, BBC and other internationally recognised media is credible?
4)nice to see you recognising that 'coincidence' may not really be coincidence.. maybe we can extend the same critical method to other world events that shape our political realities.

Hannu said...

Mani,

1) I don't get your point. Yet again, who's to tell it is all her story and not words put in her mouth by the Libyan press/authorities?

2)Yet another thing to be curious about: Did AL appoint you his spokesperson :)

3) There is a huge difference between what is known as free press (even if it is sometime not so free) and press controlled by totalitarian regime to serve their own interest. It is a fact that some of those families are being coaxed by the Libyan authorities to lie and distort things in exchange of false never-fulfilled promises. Who's to blame them!

4)There is coincidence and there is coincidence. Go ahead and extend, it's a free world :)

Glad to see you're extending beyond your blog.

AngloLibyan said...

Hannu, I do have doubts as well, just like you said and thats why I mentioned at the beginning that this is from the Libyan press. All the points you mentioned are valid.
The reason I am using articles printed by the Libyan press is because there is nothing else any where about the plight of these families which again could be to Libya banning them from talking to the international press so I have no other choice, I just want to highlight their plight and struggle since most international news is only about the nurses and doctor but these families are being forgotten another thing which is the most important to me is to show or protest that the Libyan government is doing next to nothing to help these families.

Mani thank you again and your point number 3 is correct, Libya being first on the list :o) although hannu's point 1 is what I believe might be happening anyway.
of course if i find any articles about these families that are not written by Libyan press then thats what I will read & post about.

No I didnt appoint mani as my spokesman but he is very good :o)

I didn't rush to comment, for I was afraid I'd write something I'd regret later and want a "regret" button. Hannu said most of what I would say better than I could. I wish just to mention that the oldest Bulgarian nurse accused in the HIV case is named Snezhana, not Sanjaka. Quite a difference, isn't it? It's not a minor change to make the name pronouncable to an Arabic speaker. I suppose that this woman, or the person who has instructed her, has forgotten the name and possibly recollected the historical term "sanjak". But wouldn't we expect the name of a child's murderer to be written with giant letters in the mother's mind?
Also, the claim of the mother to know the diagnosis and treatment... then why bring the child to a hospital at all?
AL, I don't quite understand why George Michael should mention the plight of the children. I think any linking of the infected children to the accused can only reinforce the suspicion that the accused are guilty. Besides, do people campaigning for the children mention the plight of the medics (except to express regret that they are still alive)?

Allahi faraj 3alaykum ya rab, I am a Libyan myself but raised in canada but with a strong traditional and islamic family and I can assure you that we Libyans have no ways of deception or lying or anything hypocrited like that. I hear your pain wallahi and I cant believe the world is against Libya just for justice. This is the world prophet muhammad(saws) told us will come, when the good or justice becomes injustice and the bad(injustice) becomes justice. we are just and the bulgarians are truly and rightly accused in no way will over 200 families have lied and claimed their children to be infected. I feel your sorrow, Allah faraj

Maya M said...

Anonymous, nobody has ever said that this lady, or any other parent of an infected child, lies about the child being infected. Hannu and I have commented only on the "small" detail about "nurse Sanjaka". Hannu is a Libyan and a mother, she has no pro-Bulgarian bias. As for me, I am neither a heroine nor a saint and I assure you that if any of my babies is infected with HIV and if the government promises to pay for the treatment if I say some things with, eh, too creative relationship to the truth, I wouldn't even hesitate. I would say everything that is wanted from me. I wouldn't give a damn that innocent people would get into trouble because of my testimony. In fact, I guess that for a mother of an HIV-infected child the whole world is guilty and no innocent people have remained.

Anonymous said...

Maya m.....that is so true! If I was a mother of an infected child, I would do everything necessary (whether ethical or not) to insure his well being and treatment. Also, I believe it is human to try to hastily find blame in someone or a group of people. Hard to do when the true culprit is pure human error due to the negligence.

Hannu...Anglo..I agree with you both. I think this was a PR spin in order for the government not to accept blame and fault.

When it comes to hospital, everything has to be documented. How can the Libyan mother be convinced that the injection given to her child's IV tube was in fact the AIDS virus?? It could have very well been a medication to reduce the child's fever.
I am assuming the children were infected by contaminated blood (through a transfusion). If so, then WHERE did this blood come from?? From whom?? What segment of the population donates blood? How did the AIDS virus come to Libya? By which means? This is what everyone should worry. Aids has finally arrived in Libya!!!

If this was conspiracy, how come there isn't any Libyans being
implicated. I find it too convenient for foreigners to be the only ones being blamed.

Either way, it is a very painful tragedy that these families are experiencing. I can also guess due to the expenses and availability of the medications, they may not be able to get the proper treatment as they do here in the States. In the United States (and in Europe), the average amount of years a person can live with HIV is 24 years. As long, he or she takes the proper medications and dosages. :-( Blu

Anonymous 1......you are so wrong! You scare me with your rhetoric!
