Last year I posted a
rare picture of the former Queen of Libya,
Queen Fatima El-Sharif, for that was the first time ever that I saw the Queen, it is a shame that in countries such as Libya they would completely erase parts of our history just because it does not suit somebody, here in Europe many countries used to be kingdoms then they revolted and replaced their kingdoms with republics but they never hide their history, they teach it as it was, with its bad and good, yet in our country they only mention the Sinusi family in a bad disgraceful way when the truth is completely different, no one is perfect but compared to what Libya has at the moment, many can only say please bring on the good old days.
Having the Internet is such a blessing sometimes, it gives us the chance to research information that we do not have or we are not allowed to know anything about. During one of these searches I found some pictures of King Idris & Queen Fatima during a visit to Egypt in 1964, again as with the first picture I published, I saw an elegant lady that by far exceeded in her elegance Egypt's first lady and her daughters, who just could not keep their eyes off the Libyan Queen.
A good friend of mine told me that Queen Fatima was always very down to earth that when ever she came to an event, there would be a luxurious seat set up for her and that she always refused to sit there and chose to sit with the people instead, I bet not many can do that these days!
Here I leave you with some pictures that I am sure many of you have not seen before:
Queen Fatima on the left with the wife and daughters of president Jamal Abdul-Nasser

The following picture was sent to me by a friend and as far as I know it is the most recent picture of Queen Fatima and was taken in the mid 1990s during a Haj trip, may Allah give her long life and the best of health inshaAllah:

Salam Anglo-Libyan,
Great finds you managed to dig up. I agree with you on the need to perserve our history whether it's good or bad, for how else do we learn how to learn from past mistakes or validate our current state.
The picture of the former queen in the mid 1990's appears to still be stunningly elegant.
Salam Anglo-Libyan. I enjoy reading your blog. Yes, I agree with you that she is a very gracious lady and deserves respect. But we must be realistic about the monarchy part and not give it too much 'shine'. After all, Libyans have never been too fond of any sham aristocracy.

She is a very gracious lady and deserves our total and utter respect. Ahmed Al Baji
What queen r u talking about ??
Common u seem to be poisoned by typical brit ignorance and think the whole world is singing the same tune ...
We never had a royal family as such, the Sunusi was not even a Libyan ... and he was accidently placed in such a position "a king" for geopolitical reasons beyond your apprehension .. The main reason was to keep Libya united and avoid splitting it into 3 states which explains the fact of the national parties in Libya of accepting him as temporary solution .. In fact the real leader at that time was Bashir Al-Sadawy .. and he should have been inaugurated as the de-facto premier of Libya .. and not an Algerian immigrant who had nothing to offer other than please his masters ..
Common man .. read some true history and stay away from typical rhetoric ..
salam ibeebarbie
thanks for your good points
salam Umm Salwa
thank you and welcome to my blog
as far as I know and from knowing personally some members of the Sanusi family, they are down to earth and far away from being aristocratic unlike the new Royals!
ahlan Ahmad Al Baji and thank you

yes I am a common Libyan man and proud of it and I am a common Brit and proud of it too.
what are you?
nothing but a mouth piece for you know who!
The Libyan kingdom was not perfect and I mentioned that in my post but any one in their right state of mind know it was a lot better than what you have now, so the King was originally Algerian, so what?? are you sure you are 100% Libyan? or is being a racist common to people like you?
you mentioned the King pleasing his masters, do you know anything about who sold the HIV children of Benghazi or the Libyan victims of the American bombing in 1986 or the hundreds of thousands of Libyans that died fighting the Italians who were sold for a little disgraceful sum of money?
May I remnd you of the colour of envy:
it is GREEN :o)

Yes ,nice photos of our former queen... thanks for sharing.
She was and still is a decent and elegant woman, wish other stateswomen would learn from her if you know what I mean :-)
Thank you for the photos. Anglo you have to remember that some of your readers favor the present regime than the old one plus that more than 80% or more of the population was born in the present regime or were under the age of 10 when Qaddafi came to power which means they have no clue how people lived during the Kingdom reign.
Anonymous I respect your opinion and disagreeing with Anglo. Lets be honest about ourselves, what do you think of our present situation , it is a disaster, even Rwanda after going through genocide are doing better than us, which happens to be a poor country.
Anonymous you pay too much attention to Anglo support for the old regime but to him he is talking about the good old times during that period of time and he did not get the full benefit of it because he was young :-)

Nothing wrong to know your own history, you do not want to end up like in Japan were they re write their history books by omitting Japan atrocities in Asia in the last century.
The bottom line that Anglo used his free time to look for photos or do research about the Queen and furnished us her photos. She lived not far away from me in Cairo and did not how she looked.
to all commentators who are ignorant of the way we lived in the old regime :
We were people who respected others and had
1)a law system implemented to say the least ......
2)nobody would ever dream of taking anything that belonged to another citizen .
3) families were closer
4)even the weather was much better..lol...and not as crazy
Anglo thanks for the nice and interesting topic....bless you !

yes I think I know exactly what you meant lol :o)
hello MusicLover
thanks for the links, very intersting, at the least the Egyptians did not hide that part of their history, although glad to say the Libyan Kingdom was never that aristocratic, being down to earth is always better :o)
thanks for the support and I listened to the first African song by Lura, really good, never heard of her before but very nice...
Thank you Huda, nice points.

Once I was watching a documentary on Aljazeerah about Queen Fareedah of Egypt. and since then I've always wondered how Libya's Queen looked like, and I'm very thankful for the photos.
She looks kind with a beautiful smile. All respect to her.
