Smuggling Libya's Antiquities....

Music Lover sent me a link to an article about the looting of Libya's antiquities by gangs mainly operating from Egypt, the precious antiquities are smuggled to Egypt where they are then sold to the highest bidders in Europe and North America!

Here is a quote from the article:

"Libyan officials will admit off the record that looting has severely damaged the spectacular and extensive Roman ruins spread across their country’s 2,000km-long Mediterranean coastline. But they shy away from direct criticism for fear of incurring their government’s wrath or of offending Egypt, Libya’s neighbour and ally"

This again shows the importance of the Libyan authorities when protecting any Libyan wealth or heritage and allowing Egypt which has exhausted its resources to ruin anything precious that belongs to Libya, I have even mentioned before how Egyptian gangs are illegally collecting the rare Libyan tortoises and smuggling them to Egypt where they are sold as Egyptian tortoises to tourists because this tortoise has become extinct in Egypt.

What can I say except shame on Libya and Egypt for allowing these major crimes to take place while they turn a blind eye!

You can read the full article about the looting of Libya's antiquities Here.

I was disappointed to read an article on Libya Alyoum about the opening of Chicken Cottage restaurant in Tripoli and the article praising the place and even saying how some Libyan people were sent to London to be trained to prepare the food for this place!
There really is nothing fancy about Chicken Cottage which is owned by some British Muslim, it is a fried chicken chain, one of many that you find all over the UK serving unhealthy greasy bad quality food!

Libya is a very rich country and if it must provide Western food chains then they can afford a much better quality than this, this is fried chicken at its worst and I can describe it in 2 words: Cheap & Nasty.

The only thing drives me to Chicken Cottage is, because it’s Halal but as you said it’s cheap and nasty and always you prove yourself right by receiving the worst customer service. I am not big fan of fast food any way but sometimes you have not much time to cook and since I live in London, so time is not always on my side.
By the way I visited the one in Tripoli Last year it’s located in Sough Al Tlatt. There was no much difference from the ones here in London. On the other hand, I think it’s a relatively big thing in Libya, so no wonder why it’s been praised!!!

I visited Cyrene(Shahhat)last friday ,and as usual i enjoyed it..But neverless ,i felt hurt and disappointed by the increasing negligence u can see and feel...Piles of garbage every where ,neglected priceless artifacts ..No wonder if there is gangs of smugglers running all over the place.. It is a great shame on libyan government to leave these national treasure for lotters ,thieves and criminals...
Shame on them
Thank you for this great post..

About the restaurant..U can feel capitalism creeping fast in the fabrique of our socity ,which i don't mind my self..but the problem is ,the same people who ran the old collapsable economy in Libya are the same who running the show now...Not promising..Libya has great potential of reasonable ,profitable and good investments..The problem is they allow such non sense projects ,and they prevent others ,more effective and more serious!!!
This new Libya ,only a twisted version of the old one...sigh
TYhanks dear friend
See u

I was reading an issue of "Archeology" 4 years ago, and it had some material about Libya. When I went online on their site, I found more details and the second link about the stolen artifacts. What I meant is that the 2nd link had a link that took you on a page where you found more details on the stolen artifact. I found out earlier that the page doesn't exist anymore! why? i have no idea!
you know what else the foreigners have exported massively from Libya? stone age tools! I still remember american kids from the oil companies bringing to school flints, arrow points etc..to show during our History class when I was in 4th or 5th grade...

then I remembered something: 2 summers ago when i was In Libya, my brother-in-law who was driving us to Guemata, told me that when the russians were in Garabouli or sidi bannour( I think that was in the late 70's), I don't remember exactly the spot it's on the sea after Tajoura, someone from the family who was working there in the camp, told him they were excavating and founding statues and artifacts everyday(yes) and nobody can tell where they disappeared....
salaam

Hi Al !

Yes Im hopefully fully recovered :-)
next ! lol ;-)good one lol

Fast food is big time here. If you dont go or have no notion you are considered illiterate. Many Libyans prefer good old Libyan Cuisine to fast fad restaurants. I enjoy the meals at good restaurants like the one Shahrazad goes to "The Sakhra" situated in the heart of Hai Alandulus is the best choice; offering great service ;you get a decent meal at a fraction of the cost of the Corinthia Restaurants.

Hi Al !

Looting has been big business here even in the old regime. We have ongoing management crisis and careless people in control whod give anything to make money -some have even their wives on show to say the least.....
Patriotism has no meaning ,as we lack awareness programmes and each to fend for himself and make money ,no matter what ie what is happening and seriously I am so disgusted that our priorities and values have come to such a level.

My friends husband owns the Chicken Cottage here in Tripoli .It is nice to have a option .

Actually my husband owned the very 1st fried chicken place in Tripoli back in the 1990's and was a good place with good quality food that was given A1 ratings by the health department all the time .

fast food is in general bad but if it must be provided then there are some better quality such as Nandos or maybe even Subway!
good to see you.

Thank you anonymous for contributing to this post, very sad.

BC you have put it so well, that is my point more or less! thank you.

anonymous, really thank you for the links.
this looting practice has been going on for so long yet no one responsible is trying to do anything about it, the worst thing is allowing gangs from a neighbouring country to ruin Libya even more!

Music Lover, thanks for bringing the article to our attention.

Luna
yes you are right about awareness and so on, unfortunately it seems like if it is done on purpose to keep the Libyans in the dark!

Mabrouk, are we going to say Next! again soon or are the zamzamat having a break for a bit :o)

oops on the edge :o)
I have no doubt that your husband's place was of good quality as you said.
I am going about chicken cottage because of its bad reputation here in London, I agree its nice to have the option but I wish the option was of better quality than that!
