A Hero or Mass Murderer?
Al-Megrahi returned yesterday to Libya, I too was hoping his return to Libya would be a low key event but he was received as a hero!I do not know if he is guilty of this horrible crime but this man was convicted of killing 270 innocent civilians yet the Libyan authorities showed how distasteful they are at a time when the victim's families were watching in pain, to most of them this is not acceptable.
Al-Megrahi protested his innocence for 10 years then few days ago he dropped his appeal and therefore accepted his guilt, I know he is ill and dying but if he is innocent he should have stuck to his appeal to the end, his family were never prevented from visiting him or even living near by. at the end of the day whether he did this crime or not, Al-Megrahi was working for the Libyan intelligence and I do know from people that worked for Libyan Airlines in the 1980s that he was feared and was involved in many nasty acts against Libyans, this does not make him into a hero, what about the thousands of Libyans that died just because they cried freedom, people like Al-Jahmi and the hundreds that were killed in Bu Sleem prison and many others... they were the real heroes.
The Scottish government did take a courageous step by releasing Al-Megrahi to spend his last days with his family, whether they did it for compassionate reasons or purely for business is for you to decide.
If he was innocent, he should have stayed and died fighting to clear his name and the Libyan authorities have embarrassed themselves yet again

What…are we now giving out FREE Lunches? Since when??? Hey, I’m sorry for his cancer, but one never knows truly how much longer they can live…his last death wish may even be to do another “killing of Americans” deed. These people don’t care, but only to KILL America. They hate us…
"what about the thousands of Libyans that died just because they cried freedom, people like Al-Jahmi and the hundreds that were killed in Bu Sleem prison and many others... they were the real heroes."
What happened to these people ceased being important the moment Al-Jahmi committed an anti-Western act. Until Libyans are willing to claim, "It's better to endorse the West/Israel/Britain than to accept terrorism and endorse its conquest" why would matters change?

i believe that mr.magrahi is an innocent person.tell u why, if the uk has any dout about him ,they`ll NEVER release him.
Actually they r sure that he isn`t guilty.otherwise,he`ll continue in his appeal.and then, there`ll be a big scandle in the hitory of scottish justice.but, unfortunately he has no time as he is terminally ill.so, he has to accept this offer.
Good post, AL.
Personally, I don't think the UK has any authority to be deciding what is "compassionate" or not. The UK was not the victim of this man. The only connection to the UK is that the plane happened to have been blown up in the skies over Scotland. The US should have insisted he be tried in an American court. We only allowed Scotland to prosecute him as a courtesy, because we trusted the Scots to be just. That trust was misplaced. I hope we never make that mistake again, as it seems clear at this point that the UK threw justice over the side in interests of currying favor with Libya, despite vocal protests from the US.
I can tell you, this has caused much outrage here in my country. I don't know how many more similar episodes the US can take before the so-called "special" relationship between US and UK becomes really un-special. And this is really the last thing Obama needed right now. His foreign policy is the only area where his approval ratings are in positive territory, and it doesn't make him look very good at all that this was allowed to play out the way it did and he wasn't able to do anything about it.
Ramadan Kareem dear AL :)
I was waiting for you to post something and after i saw the news about lockerbie last night i knew it would push you to write, and i was right!
anyway it's sad that this guy is given the hero's welcome he might not deserve. who knows the truth, coz i don't.. but out of sensitivity and humanity one should not allow this and instead make sure he arrives from the airport to his home in a low-key manner. it's very disrespectful to the victims' families as you correctly mentioned.
Plus no country in the world should support terrorism, and regardless of if this guy is guilty or not, if someone is seen of supporting him then it might be taken the wrong way. surely people recognise this.. ufff....
anyway wishing you a great Ramadan, today's the first day here in dubai and hope it's the same for the lovely folks in london.
i'm going to miss the tarawee7 prayers in the beautiful turkish mosque with the lovely imam's voice this year.
Ramadan Kareem AL. I am not westerner yet I am disappointed by such decision for the sake of Truth, which I doubt we will know.
Unfortunately the truth of this incident has not been fully covered but releasing him is not correct because it gives a wrong signal that killers can walk free, I am talking in legal terms.

Thank you everyone for the comments and Ramadan wishes and the same to all of you.
ليبية وافتخر Thank you for the kind Ramadan wishes and the same to you and yours.
its so easy for some people to accuse me of being westernised or influenced by the British because I live in the UK just because you and they do not like my opinion, I have even been told that I am not Libyan enough because my mother is not Libyan and that is why I have liberal views sometimes!!
may I suggest you read some Arab and Libyan websites such as Libya Jeel and Alarabeya where there are many comments from Libyans that live in Libya and have the same view just like me, would you accuse them of being westernised as well??
If you check my blog archive I have written many times about the Libyan HIV children and although I am not convinced that the Bulgarian nurses were responsible for this tragedy still I did not support the hero welcome they recieved in Bulgaria, as they say, 2 wrongs do not make right.
You want us as Arabs and Muslims to be happy that Al-Megrahi returned to his family, how about you show some compassion for the thousands of Libyan families that will never spend Ramadan with their sons that were killed in prisons and elsewhere, at the end of the day Al-Megrahi was part of Libyan intelligence and we all know what they are capable of.
Regarding the Lockerbie families recieving large amount of money, yes its true but would that compensate you for the loss of a son or daughter? I doubt it very much.
and as for the greedy west as you call them, yes they can be greedy but look at your own door step, corruption and greed are ruining Libya while people like you only see what they want to see, what a shame! our people are cheap not because the west says that, its because of our beloved rulers that have no value for their own people unless they are part of the elite.
another thing about greed, do you know what some of the HIV families did wth the money given to them as compensation? I am sure you know some of the stories of how they invested the money for their own benefit and left the children to rot, this money wasnt to buy properties, cars and gold, it was meant to be to make life easier for the victims but GREED won.
I do not belittle my own people, its people like you that do that, please check your facts, look around you before you blame the west or people living in the west.
Ramadan Mubarak
I liked very much your post and comment.
I do not find anything wrong in being Westernized and wishing to Westernize one's country. This has been the case with me (though I've never lived in the West proper), and people have often accused me.
Personally, I have mixed thoughts about Mr. Megrahi. I generally trust British justice, and I surely don't believe the fancy conspiracy theories circulated around. However, a miscarriage of justice can always happen, especially when a horrible crime is committed and the public insists to have somebody - anybody - punished.
What you write about his activities prior to his arrest remind me of a conversation with a friend when Bulgarian medics in Libya were first charged.
She: "Our authorities must arrest the highest ranking Libyan official they can lay their hands upon. Then they must fabricate some phony but grave charges against him, and trade him for our prisoners."
Me: "How can you suggest for our state to become a hostage-taker and frame an innocent person?!"
She: "High-ranking Qadaffi's employee and innocent? Don't make me laugh!"
In a minute, however, she agreed that it is unthinkable to take a technically innocent person hostage, no matter what.
I agree with you that it would be better to meet the medics quietly upon their release. I know many relatives of infected children will forever believe in the Bulgarians' guilt, and it would do no harm to respect their feelings, once we got our people. However, many politicians used the occasion to advertise themselves.
I hope that the opinion of most Libyans that Megrahi is innocent reflects their utmost disapproval of the Lockerbie bombing and similar acts.
If he is guilty, I would still blame more the system that shaped and trained him than him as individual. And if he had been let to die behind bars, the system would still be untouched, and his master would keep his position.
Let's hope some day truth will come out, though chances look slim.
Thank you Maya M
Hi Anglo
just a note to say that "Programmer" is completely wrong in saying that just because the aeroplane blew up over Scotland that it was allowed to conduct the court case "as a courtesy" (when are the Americans ever courteous when it comes to their own interests?). The plane blew up over the town of Lockerbie IN SCOTLAND and destroyed a whole street in this town, killing lots of families who were asleep in their beds at the time. Therefore, as the crime took place over Scotland and involved the killing of Scottish innocents, then yes it was only right under international law that he be tried according to scottish law.
Let's be honest here, the Americans aren't exactly to be trusted when it comes to implementing "international Law or even the most basic terms of the Geneva Conventions".
This man was a convicted criminal as we all know, however what sets the good people apart from the bad ones are compassion, rule of law and respect for others. In accordance with these basic tenets, i fully agree with the decision of the Scottish Minister to allow him to return to his family to die. To do anything less would be inhumane and would make us a lesser nation. I am proud to say that we have a long history of socially-minded laws in Scotland that favour the person over ownership of property as they have in the USA. Otherwise, god forbid, we would have people dying in the streets because they couldn't afford healthcare as oh so regularly happens in the good old U.S of A.
Politics, baby , Politics ! Got play the game to win don't you know by now ? All a game and no one the winner .
Hi Al !
My comment will surprise you :-)For I dont see Megrahi as a hero or murderer but a simple agent; one that all countries have, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time ..the rest is history in the making of dirty politicians who grabbed the chance of turning the wheel to their cause.
Do you actually believe that he planted the bomb ?This is like stating Osama Ben Laden blew up the Twin Towers LOL . This is all a CIA cover up to teach the politicians of the world who is boss ,just in case they forget :-)
Politics-is like a prostitute, the higher the pay the more the reimbursement and filth ~Luna
Political language -- and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists -- is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
GEORGE ORWELL,
And with the quote I said it all or did I :-) ???
Have a Blessed Ramadan !
Luna.. what a brilliant quote!!!
"Politics-is like a prostitute, the higher the pay the more the reimbursement and filth"
Two thumbs up :)
Ramadan Kareeeeeem :))
i agree with the catholic scot.
Dear Anglo,
I think we are being pretty innocent in this case. UK got a good deal with oil in Libya after his releasing and even CNN is talking about it.
Things are not for free and we do know that. Also, nobody can do such a "operation" as exploding an airplane all alone.
If he is guilty or not I really don't know, but I wonder how long the negotiations have been on the table to give freedom to someone who was condemned by a UK court.
Happy Ramadan!
While I respect Scottish Catholic's opinion that compassion and humaneness are important and a dying person should be released to his family no matter what, I am afraid the anti-Americanism expressed in his comment is doing it a disservice.
When somebody says that Americans care only for their interests, I often ask, "What should Americans do in order to make you admit that they do NOT care only for their interests?" I have never yet heard a meaningful answer.
I would not say that US policies are all good or based only on values. However, I think that thousands of US soldiers killed in WWII in Europe would turn in their graves if they could hear a British "ally" say they fought only for their country's interests. Not to mention the later US wars in Korea, Vietnam and former Yugoslavia (no petrol in any of these countries).
It is true that my relations in the USA complain from US health care. At the same time, my friends in the UK tell horror stories about British health care. If somebody knows a country with a really good health care system, please let me know about it. Preferably on my blog, because the subject has nothing to do with Anglo's post.
At the end, I think that praising a nation (similarly to praising a person) sounds better from the mouths of other people.
Hellllloooooo Al !
Long time no post ? All well I hope !
Ramdaniyat or what ?
