The above comments sound very strange to a person like me who belongs to an alcohol-drinking culture.
"The government should immediately ban all alcohol, but it is too selfish and hasn't the guts."
Anybody remembering that US government did ban alcohol, with "excellent" results? Namely, explosive development of organized crime, plus alcohol consumption actually rising.
Still, I think Americans got away lightly with this experiment, compared to other societies that did it.
All alcohol-banning societies known to me have features I don't like, such as excessive strict rules regulating personal life. I believe this is partly due to eliminating alcohol (and not replacing it with anything else).
Human brain is too logical and dutiful when left on its own, so it needs chemical relaxation.
In "East of Eden", Steynbeck describes his grandmother Lisa, a very devoted and virtuous Protestant who neither enjoys life nor lets anybody else in the house enjoy it. At age 60 or so, the doctor prescribes her alcohol. She is initially disgusted, but then begins to like it, raises the dose to half a liter per day and becomes much more tolerant and easier to live with.
(My own status: drinking moderately, like my husband, parents and friends, and yes, it is possible.)

I do remember many years ago when I was living in Tripoli, Hay Alandalus, there used to be many of these ex-pat drinking parties and Libyan parties too, I suppose things got even worse now.

What is really sad is the amount of ex-pats in Libya that are binge drinking.

They go to their private clubs and parties and drink the night away. Many have had road accidents on their way home. I think there is enough booze in Libya to keep the entire country drunk for a decade.

And Libyans are drinking more and more these days too. sad....

Governments,states,counties,provinces,cities,
and towns can not survive with out the taxation of alcohol, tobacco and gas in western world.

In USA they raised the drinking age from 18 to 21 about 25 years, in 70's they had bars on university campuses!!!, smoking are off limits from many buildings.

The only ones I see who smoke on university campus in my city are Asian,Arabs,Eastern Europeans plus few young Americans.

Frequency of smoking and drinking that includes even the quality :-) varies in different parts of USA.

bad behaviour wll reflect on many prob cuz no one know wht he do at tht moment & answers became popular .. i duno remeber any thing .... plus bad smell & side effect of alcohol on d body ...

To reiterate what Akak and Leebya said Hamdulillah 3la ni3mat Al Islam. When muslims face hard times their faith is strong enough for them to turn to Allah (swt) and the Quran and say Alhamdulillah 3la kul 7’eer!!

The adverts don’t say STOP DRINKING but basically drink in moderation and know your limits etc otherwise your ruin your top or favourite jacket. The sad thing is no government that’s making money off alcohol sales is going to say “stop drinking” they have too much to lose, what would happen to all the taxes they get from alcohol sales. They show that they are concerned by making adverts yes but that’s all it is concern, the way they see it is it’s a free country people can do what they please as long as they don’t break the law!! Even the most health conscious drink, the saying has switched from an apple a day keeps the doctor away to a glass of wine (red of course) a day keeps the doctor away!!

There are many reasons why people turn to drink from needing “Dutch courage” to be more social and have a good time (how can you have a good time if you’re completely legless and unable to speak!!)to trying to forget. Maybe the government should think about addressing the reasons why people get themselves to the stage of binge drinking. Alcohol in the UK is part of everyday life and culture. A glass of wine/or whatever for lunch another for dinner, a bottle of champagne whenever the mood strikes. Kids are bought up with adults drinking(in moderation) around them, so never see the bad effects of excessive drinking and then they start drinking some at a very young age (drinking cider late at night in parks etc). Friends of mine who grew up with parents that drank waaaay too much don’t drink themselves as they have seen and lived through what alcohol does to the person and their families.

Kids are growing up a lot quicker nowadays maybe they should be shown the harsh reality of what excessive drinking can do...I personally am in two minds about this, shock therapy may work in educating the kids BUT they are still kids at the end of the day whether they can act 18 even though they are only 12!!

I never really understood why people drink when they know they will do stupid things and behave badly when drunk. Not just that, but drinking is VERY bad for your health. As Akak said, Alhamdulilah we are Muslims. We are blessed to have a religion that encourages us to use our brain to make decisions. The road to a good life (and after life) is paved for us and all we need to do is make sure we do not get off track (this is where the brain comes in handy!!)

And while I applaud the mayor's decision to ban drinking in the London transport network (although it should be banned everywhere - Alcohol is evil) and the attempts made to educate the young population through advertisements about the effects of alcohol consumption. From a marketing perspective, I do not see any effectiveness in the advertisements. The message is simply not specific enough! The adverts effectively tell that alcohol can lead to such behavior… but everyone knows that too much drinking is bad, so what does the adverts tell that is new exactly? A sane person would not relate to the adverts because they would be like, "I would never let myself reach such a stage" or "I would never drink THAT much" or “I know my limits when drinking”.

The message I got from seeing the adverts was, when you drink TOO much, this is what may happen. The message should be, “STOP DRINKING NOW!” I feel though that a message as important as this cannot be mucked up without devastating effect. People need specific things to stop a bad habit; in this case it should be FEAR. With smoking it is lung cancer. With junk food its heart disease. With Alcohol is organ destruction... and liver disease.

Nowadays, people are more health conscious. The government needs to take advantage of that!

I know what you are talking about as I always say "The Brits are civilized people until 10pm" but what is odd is that the rest of Europe are not as bad as the Brits and they are proud of it

The way i see it is that a "drunk" person guy/girl is worthless and I wouldnt waste a drop of water if they were burning

When you see what Alcohol does you start to thank god that we are Muslims and are forbidden to drink (although a lot of Muslims do drink)

Finally, The way I see it is that the difference between humans and animals is the brain and if we loose it, we are no better than animals (and not the cute, good ones :P)
